Helping Youth with Co-occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Needs: Applying Motivational Interviewing, MET, and CBT to Promote Change

Win Turner, Ph.D
Center for Behavioral Health Integration

11:00am and 1:30pm Sessions

Helping youth with mental health and substance use needs, or co-occurring disorders (COD), can be overwhelming and a challenge for even the most advanced professionals. Substance use and mental health concerns are interrelated and can be best supported with an integrated approach.

This interactive session is designed for professionals with little or advanced COD experience and will include the prevalence, summary of current COD research, an overview of a combined intervention utilizing motivational interviewing, motivational enhancement therapy, and CBT.  Participants will learn the framework of an integrated COD session structure, review session handouts, and deepen their ability to use the method to: a)  integrate the youth’s substance use and mental health concerns, b) activate youth self-awareness, c) elicit change talk, and d) elicit commitment talk toward behavior change. Participants may share case examples of youth and discuss strategies to apply this approach in sessions.
