Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Irritability and Aggression in Children and Adolescents

Denis G. Sukhodolsky, Ph.D.,
Yale School of Medicine

1:30pm Session

Irritability and related aggressive behaviors, such as temper tantrums and anger outbursts, are common problems in children and adolescents. This presentation will cover how children learn to manage their emotions effectively over the course of development and what clinicians and parents can do if anger outbursts become too frequent or too intense. We will also discuss the ways in which emotions may be dysregulated in children with a variety of mental health concerns, such as Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Participants will learn about psychological treatments for aggression, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and parenting training, and leave with specific strategies to add to their toolbox for helping children cope with challenging emotions.
